To keep your toilets running properly, only use them the way they were intended. This means that you should avoid flushing certain items that could clog them or cause serious issues for your plumbing system. Here are some things you should never flush down your toilet.

Baby Wipes

Perhaps the biggest culprit of toilet clogs are the notorious baby wipes. These products are specifically made to be thicker and more absorbent than toilet paper. They are NOT made to be flushed down the toilet. Many sewer backups are caused by baby wipes every year. Throw them in the trash and never in the toilet.

Cotton Swabs and Cotton Pads

Cotton is extremely absorbent. So, when you flush something cotton down the toilet, it’s going to expand in your pipes and cause all kinds of problems. Never flush anything made of cotton down your toilet.

Paper Towels and Tissues

It may seem like paper towels and tissues would be safe to flush down your toilets since they are similar to toilet paper. However, many of these products are thicker or more absorbent than toilet paper and can easily clog your system. The only paper product that should ever be flushed down the toilet is toilet paper.

Some Cleaning Chemicals

After using a bucket of cleaning chemicals to clean the bathroom, don’t immediately rely on your toilet (or other drains) to dispose of the chemicals. Some of these chemicals can damage your piping over time and should be disposed in a different fashion.
